An Introduction to Academic Discourse

The purpose of An Introduction to Academic Discourse, is to teach students written, oral, and electronic skills that will enable them to communicate effectively in English throughout their freshman year and beyond.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

   On successful completion of the course, students should be able to

A.  read, interpret and extract information from the major types of written academic discourse.

B.  communicate, in writing, information based on what they have read

C.  demonstrate an acceptable level of oral communication on a range of issues

D.  use appropriate vocabulary and expressions orally and in writing

E.  make informed decisions based on independent, critical thought within the context of their work

F.  appreciate the importance and role of ethics in oral and written communication
