Workshop on the Future of Clean Energy in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

After years of debate on measurements, statistical, and physical modeling results; a near consensus among the world's scientists, engineers and politicians has concluded that we are warming the planet. Unless we explore opportunities now to curb global warming, our way of life, our planet, and our children are all in danger.
For over the past 200 years, the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, and deforestation has caused the concentrations of heat-trapping "greenhouse gases" to increase significantly in our atmosphere. These gases prevent heat from escaping to space, somewhat like the glass panels of a greenhouse. Today, the world is facing food shortage which is directly related to increasing levels of green house gases in the local atmosphere that could be minimized and controlled through the usage of clean and renewable sources of energy and efficient technologies. In the wake of the above alarming issues, many countries are embarking on utilization of renewable/clean sources of energy as an option to mitigate energy crisis and to overcome catastrophic effects of pollution.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol. Clean energy and carbon capture and sequestration are getting increased attention in the Kingdom and the gulf region. Clean energy includes energy efficiency and clean energy supply options like highly efficient combined heat and power as well as renewable energy sources. The clean sources of energy include solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, biomass, hydrogen, fuel cell, etc. as well as carbon capture and sequestration from emissions of power, oil and petrochemical plants. Furthermore solar and wind resources are available on every part of the earth and hence are local, does not require grid connectivity or means of transport.
