SAUDI BRITISH BANK CHAIR IN FINANCE

The financial system is the cornerstone of any modern economy. The important role that a well functioning financial system plays in the economic development process is obvious from the experience of the western economies and more recently, the dramatic achievements of the tiger economies of the Far East. It is vital for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to take active steps, first, in establishing the key financial institutions that comprise the financial system and second, in training the next generation of finance professionals to manage a modern, complex, financial system.

The Department of Finance and Economics at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) is uniquely positioned to play a key role in this development process. To achieve these national goals, the Department of Finance and Economics had established a Chair in Finance. The Chair person is working as a catalyst to promote research, introduce new teaching methods, cement links with industry, and also providing consulting support for end users in the Kingdom. The Department of Finance & Economics is in process in coordination with the Chair person to establish a “Center for Financial and Economic Research” within the University to serve as a focal point.

THE CHAIRHOLDER

The Chair is currently occupied by a distinguished scholar with credentials spanning excellence in research, an extensive record of business consulting and a reputable track record in teaching in one or more areas of Financial Economics.

CHAIRHOLDER RESPONSIBILITIES

The Chair is responsible for a number of operational areas which include:

Academically
  • Providing research leadership to the Department.
  • Evaluating and if necessary providing design support to, the teaching curriculum to reflect current developments in the area of Finance.
  • Introducing new teaching tools and methods into the classroom

Professionally

  • Hosting periodic meetings with Finance and Banking professionals in the Kingdom to enhance their expertise.
  • Establishing a newsletter aimed at disseminating new trends in world and local financial markets and at providing technical analysis to financial practitioners.

Business Consulting

  • Consulting with the local businesses to provide the necessary support to establish optimal financial systems in such areas as Investment Decision Making, Working Capital Management, Risk Analysis and Control and Foreign Direct Investments.
  • Developing training seminars and short courses aimed at bringing middle and upper financial managers to the cutting edge of new technology.
