Abstract:
The effect of measurement error is normally overlooked when designing a control chart. Measurement errors occur in many industrial situations and their effect was shown in many papers in the literature to be significant. To counteract the effect of measurement errors, this project proposes an economic model which considers the measurement error. The proposed model will attempt to finding the optimum values of the control chart variables, i.e. the sample size, the sampling frequency and the control limits. In addition, the model allows for multiple measurements to reduce the effect of measurement error. An approximate solution procedure is proposed to the model. The results show considerably high reductions in the costs associated with maintaining the control chart. The results also show that multiple measurements are more beneficial when the component is critical, i.e. provides high income.
