Abstract :

This seminar will introduce discrete production systems where items are produced one at a time. Manufacturing of large iron castings and special precast panels are examples of such production systems. If the produced items are always conforming, classical production-inventory models are applicable. We consider the case where, the production process is imperfect resulting in nonconforming items that may be reworked or scrapped. If many items are produced, the number of possible sequences of conforming and nonconforming items is enormously huge even for reasonable production periods.  We will present a very efficient approach to study such systems. A major issue that faces the manufacturer is the time it takes to produce a given number of items, customer order, which we call Promise Time (PT).  In this research, we study two possibilities for the rework process. In the first case, rework may not be perfect and it may be repeated as many times as needed until a conforming item is produced. In the second case, rework results in a conforming item. In addition the third case is considered with perfect rework, in which the produced item could be a conforming item, reworkable item, or a scrapped one. Numerical examples will be provided to illustrate these approaches.
