​​Electrical Power and Energy Systems

This group evolves from the requirements of the power industries for R & D activities in power generation, transmission, distribution requirements in the Kingdom as well the region, and the benefit of conducting such R&D at KFUPM. Also, de-regulation issues are major aspects of investigation for proper energy management. The objectives of the group include establishing and growing highly focused research programs that will cater to the needs of local utilities and develop world-class education and training programs in the areas of the group’s research concentration. This will yield more highly skilled manpower for the relevant beneficiaries. Collaborative researchers will also be invited to establish and/or enhance the concerned research programs. The Electrical Power and Energy Systems (EPES) group will be aggressively involved in basic and applied research. In the power system area the specific focus will be on (a) smart interconnected grids, (b) distributed generation and microgrid, (c) integration of renewable energy sources, (d) electricity markets and deregulation, and (e) power quality issues. High quality strong in-house research will continue as a major activity that will cater to industry needs, enhance the already existing focused research programs and establish new ones. This will increase expertise and industrial affiliation. A good training program will be developed to groom Saudi research leaders and competent technical staff at KFUPM in the selected areas of power systems and energy systems studies. The research products of the group will further enhance international standing of KFUPM and the Kingdom potential for R & D in power systems and energy systems areas.
