Water Research Group
The water research
group (WRG) will focus on basic and applied water research by securing
exchange and cooperation among researchers from different scientific
disciplinaries who have interest in water resources issues. The WRG will be
hosted by the Civil Engineering Departmentat
KFUPM Universityhas qualified
and expert faculty in the area of water resources. In addition, the
department is offering a graduate program related to "water resources and
environmental engineering" and has well-equipped and advanced laboratories
that can help researchers conduct advanced and high quality research which
will enhance and strengthen the activities that will be undertaken by the
proposed WRG.
The WRG is proposed because water is a scarce and precious resource in the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Population growth, rising living standards and
urbanization increase the pressure on available water resources, creating
imbalance between water supply and demand. To avert water crisis in the
Kingdom, efficient management of our water resources is recommended. Thus,
there is an enormous need to establish the proposed research group to
research, develop, adopt and transfer technologies and methodologies to
ensure efficient and sustainable water management. In addition, the arid
condition of the Kingdom as well as the existence of different sources of
water supplies and water demand variability, makes the water resources
systems of the Kingdom a unique condition where new methodologies and
management systems might be developed which will generate new ideas that
will contribute to and enrich the area of scientific research world wide.
The WRG will focus on different areas of research of importance to
the water resources in Saudi Arabia which include the following:
• Hydrology and hydraulics of arid regions
• Computational hydraulics
• Hydrological modeling
• Water distribution modeling
• Water resource systems optimization
• Climate change impacts on water resources
• Developing decision support systems for water supply planning and
management
• Flow and contaminant transport in groundwater systems; groundwater
remediation and groundwater recharge
• Water conservation
• Water reuse
• System analysis application in water resources
• Integrated water resource management
• GIS applications in water resources
In addition, one of the major goals of the WRG is to provide high quality,
well trained and informed professionals as future experts in the area of
water resources through an extensive graduate program.
