Chemistry labs in academia or industry should adopt a sustainable and efficient system that ensures that all experiments and researches will be executed safely without any incidents or personnel Injuries. One of the well-established worldwide-adopted safety system is Occupational safety and Health (OSH). OSH is an area concerned with the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in workplace, including chemistry labs. The goals of occupational safety and health programs include to foster a safe and healthy work environment. OSH sets up a program, policy and procedures to ensure the workplace is healthy to work in and safely to live with. OSH also covers the Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRAc) program that shall be established to identify and evaluate both existing and potential hazards on a worksite and the methods used to prevent, control or eliminate the hazards identified during working at Labs.

 

In this seminar, an overview about OSH system will be provided with some suggestions on how to engage it as practice or education in teaching and research labs. A special focus will be given to how the Chemistry Department at KFUPM can adopt an efficient and beneficial hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRAc), and what essential components are required to implement it in order to protect researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, and technicians from all possible hazards and threads. The role of the faculty member in this regard will be always emphasized.

 

Mr. Sami Al-Buhair is the HSE Manager at SADAF, He received his BS degree in Chemistry from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in 1999.  During his carrier Mr. Sami has worked with various entities such as; Ministry of Education, Ibn Sina Company at SABIC, AMIANTIT Pipe Manufacturing, Saudi Cement Manufacturing and currently in SADAF company at SABIC. Mr. Sami has established the KSA safety committee for all cement manufacturing on 2010 and HSE system at AMIANTIT and Cement company. Mr. Sami is highly qualified holding the following certificates: US OSHA, UK IOSH, UK NEBOSH, Trainer of DDC by National Safety at UK, Inspector of Scaffolding coloured codes and erections., EHSS incident Investigations, Risk assessment Leader by DuPont, ISO 9001,2008 auditor, ISO 14001:2004 EMS auditor, OHSAS18001 auditor.
