Vibrational spectroscopy, in particular infrared spectroscopy, is a powerful technique to investigate the structure and reactivity of chemical entities. When combined with the matrix isolation technique, it acquires additional characteristics, which make it a unique experimental method to investigate the structure of molecules and their reactivity, either thermal of photochemical.[1]

In this course, after a brief introduction to spectroscopy in general, the matrix isolation technique will be presented, in connection with infrared spectroscopy. We will learn that what is the method, how it can be used, and for tacking which kind of problems. Recent results obtained in Coimbra where matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy was used to investigate both thermal and photo-induced reactions, leading also to structural characterization of rare, usually short leaving molecules, will be described.

Prof. Fausto is an experienced scientist and spectroscopist who has co-authored more than 350 publications in international journals and an h-index 40+. He is currently Full Professor in the Department of Chemistry - University of Coimbra in Portugal. He is member of the European Academy of Arts, Sciences and Humanities, Chief-Editor of the Journal of Molecular Structure (Elsevier), integrates the Editorial Boards of other 5 international scientific journals, the Directive Board of the (informal) world association of matrix isolation scientists, and is the President of the EUCMOS Steering Committee. He is the Director of the Coimbra Chemistry Research Centre, and the Coordinator of the Laboratory for Molecular Cryospectroscopy and Biospectroscopy (LMCB). Rui Fausto's research group includes nowadays ca. 20 scientists from several nationalities. His actual main interests range from spectroscopy and photochemistry, to forensic, biological and computational chemistry.
