You are cordially invited by the ICS Department, to attend a PhD proposal presentation, on the above given title, by Mr. Rashad Ahmed, PhD Student, Staturday 25th May, 2013, at 01:00 PM, in Building 22, Room 130.
Abstract: Historical documents analysis and retrieval has been an active research area. Significant progress has been made in research over document analysis and retrieval in the last few years. However, most of this research works have been mostly concerned with non-Arabic historical documents. In practice, the problem of analyzing historical document images is closely tied to the problem of text line extraction. In this work, we will explore different techniques to extract text lines from document images and adapt them to Arabic documents. Similarly, the problem of retrieving document images is closely tied to the problem of image retrieval. Over the past decades, several models have been proposed for image retrieval. Among these models is bag of words model which is essentially and widely applied in various areas of computer vision. In this research work, we will make use of this technique to aid in the retrieval phase. Different types of feature will be investigated and the most suitable one will be used. This work is expected to come up with novel technique for text extraction and the uses of suitable features and suitable code book to for Arabic manuscripts.
This thesis also aims to develop a prototype for Arabic manuscript analysis and retrieval. This will include collecting Arabic manuscripts to build a database which includes manuscript images written by different scripters and have different layouts and structures that will be used to judge the effectiveness of the proposed prototype.
