Georgia Tech establishes research center with Electrical Engineer Department, KFUPM

Georgia Institute of Technology, famously known as Georgia Tech has signed an agreement to form a joint research center with the EE department at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) – the Center for Energy and Geo Processing. The Center (abbreviated CeGP), will facilitate research and academic collaborations, personnel exchanges and industry partnerships between the two institutions. KFUPM provided an initial investment of $8 million in funding for research on the Atlanta campus for six years, mirroring a similar effort on KFUPM’s campus in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Associate Professor Ghassan AlRegib in Georgia Tech’s School of Electrical and Computer Engineering will direct the Center in Atlanta, and Associate Professor and Chair of the KFUPM Department of Electrical Engineering Ali Al-Sheikhi will direct the Center in Dhahran.

Research will focus on applying advanced signal processing theories to energy-related signals and systems, with an emphasis on seismic data acquisition, processing, imaging and interpretation.
Other objectives of the collaboration include creating a hub for seismic processing and energy informatics, producing industry standard inventions and technologies, and creating an international industry consortium with a focus on innovative signal processing. Some expected outcomes are new patents, ventures, software packages and textbooks.

Dr. Ali Muqaibel and Dr. Kamal Harb arrange students' trip to KACST

On 14 November 2012, the students of Dr. Ali Muqaibel and the graduate students of Dr. Kamal Harb visited the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST). The trip was an educational experience with the main purpose of exposing the students to practical aspects of technological developments, notably related to advancements in satellite technology. During their visit, the students were able to attend a presentation on Saudi Arabia's satellites, of which 12 have been launched so far. The presentation detailed the design aspects of the satellite and demonstrated to the students how KACST personnel were able to save cost during the design phase of the satellite. The students were also able to witness Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) platform in the satellite simulation room. Dr. Al-Majed and Dr. Al-Suwaidan of KACST were kind enough to demonstrate the platform to the students. The students were also able to visit the CNC fabrication shop and see the software development efforts of KACST among other things.
