Description:

This course introduces the students to web proxy cache and streaming media servers. We first consider the design issues related to proxy cache and streaming media server development. This discussion will lead to the performance evaluation of proxy caches. Finally, we will discuss the configuration and administration issues for a proxy cache as well as a streaming media server. We will consider several commercially available proxy caches from various vendors, including Microsoft, CacheFlow, NetworkAppliances, Inktomi, and Cisco. Similarly, we will consider three widely used streaming media servers: RealNetworks, WindowsMedia, and QuickTime servers. This is an introductory course. However, it will be useful both for people who are new to networking as well as it will have useful information for ISPs and other IT professionals who administer proxy caches and deal with streaming media production, distribution, or management in production environments. A number of  experiments using proxy caches and streaming media servers in a lab environment will provide useful hands-on experience to (1) train people for proxy cache administration; and (2) learn about performance issues.

Who should attend:

Engineers and IT professionals who deal with networks or administer IT products.
