Principles
and Applications of Atomic Absorption,
College of Sciences Chemistry
The course level will range from the basic concepts to advanced topics and up-to-date developments and applications in the field. Basic concepts, instrumentation, analytical methodology and analytical applications of atomic absorption, flame emission and plasma emission techniques will be discussed. Experimental sessions in the laboratory will also be conducted. Course outlines are as follows: 1. Atomic Spectra and its analytical applications 2. Basic principles of atomic absorption and atomic emission spectroscopy 3. Instrumentation of conventional atomic absorption and atomic emission techniques: Flame and electrothermal atomization 4. Emission techniques based upon plasma atomization (ICP and DCP) including ICP-mass spectrometry techniques 5. Background and background correction 6. Interferences (spectral, chemical, instrumental and physical) in all techniques 7. Sample preparation and separation methods 8. Analytical methodology 9. Analytical applications including, industry, water and environment and petroleum products 10. Laboratory experiments on flame atomic absorption, flame emission, graphite furnace and ICP techniques
The course is designed for Chemists, Chemical Engineers, Technicians, and Technical managers interested in chemical analysis. A degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Sciences would be beneficial.
