English Language
Center (ELC)
The ELC is responsible for
developing the English proficiency necessary for students at KFUPM,
where English is the medium of instruction. Students first take the
nine-month, 600 hour, four level English course in the Orientation
English Program (OEP, a pre-university intensive English program with an
emphasis on English for Academic Purposes/English for Science and
Technology. Successful students then move to the freshman level and a
three-semester sequence of English courses (each three hours per week)
in the University English Program (UEP).
Student Promotion:
Exceptional students may bypass the OEP altogether and be placed directly
into freshman classes. Promotions are determined by high school records, the OEP
Placement Test, the Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency (MTELP), and a
writing test. Successful students have the chance to be promoted in mathematics
as well. A few students may also be promoted to freshman level after one
semester of OEP work on the basis of an MTELP retake and a grade average of "A".
Professional:
The ELC seeks well-qualified and motivated teachers who can adapt not only
to a new environment but also to the challenges of KFUPM and Saudi Arabia.
The ELC is a very large department which is constantly searching for better
procedures and methods of instruction. We encourage teachers to suggest
changes, but major changes take time because of the large-scale nature of
the task.
Much time must is spent on detailed work in the classroom, and mechanical
repetition is often essential. Strong classroom management skills are a
valuable asset. The program is highly structured, and a large body of
specified material must be covered.
