Orientation English Program (OEP)

Director

The objectives of the Orientation English Program (OEP) are as follows:

  • Improving the English language proficiency of students to enable them to begin to pursue their college studies in technical fields. This involves:

A. building an adequate technical and sub-technical vocabulary;

B. developing the necessary skills in reading, listening, writing and speaking, including:

  • tolerance of ambiguity and use of minimal redundancy in a message or situation;

  • use of non-prose materials (diagrams, charts) to anticipate and interpret written materials; and

C. developing and improving grammatical competence.

  • Reshaping student habits and attitudes. Students come to us with minimal study habits. Thus, as a by-product of being in English classes, student learn about:

  1. punctuality;

  2. the importance of attendance as a minimal requirement for success in a university or
    job;

  3. the importance of following University regulations and getting familiarized with the departments concerned with these regulations (the Registrar, Student Services, etc.);

  4. priority setting and planning;

  5. working under pressure for a sustained period of time;

  6. introduction to and familiarity with library and its potential;

  7. the academic programs available in the University's colleges;

  8. understanding and following instructions;

  9. taking objective exams;

  10. following the format requirements of written assignments;

  11. reinforcing the concept of academic integrity; and using the computer for typing and word processin
