Dissertation Advisor and Research Topic:
During the first two semesters in the Ph.D. program, a
student should contact faculty members working in his area of interest about
possible research topics.
Within the semester in which he takes the Entrance Examination, a Ph.D.
candidate should select his dissertation advisor and the research topic and
should select his dissertation advisor and the research topic and should
officially notify the Graduate Committee. The dissertation advisor must be a
member of the Department. The appropriate form should be filled in and
submitted to the Graduate Committee indicating the dissertation advisor and
the research topic.
A dissertation committee shall be formed in consultation with the advisor
and approved by the Department Chairman and the Dean of Graduate Studies.
The thesis topic must be in the major field of the student, and must be
formally approved by the thesis committee, the Department Chairman, and the
Dean of Graduate Studies.
A graduate student may change his dissertation advisor by submitting a
petition to the Graduate Committee requesting the change. The request should
give reason for the change. The name of the new advisor and the research
topic should also be provided. A maximum of two (2) such changes are
allowed.
Dissertation Committee:
After having passed the
Comprehensive Examination, the student is required
to officially submit his thesis proposal to the
Graduate School along with a list of names of his
dissertation committee. The recommended names are
selected by the student and his dissertation advisor
and usually include those of the student's
Comprehensive Examination committee. The
dissertation committee should consist of at least
three EE faculty members in addition to the
dissertation advisor, and faculty member from
outside the Department.
Dissertation:
A written dissertation must be
prepared in conformity with the general publication
regulations of the University. Completed copies of
the dissertation must be submitted to the thesis
advisor, thesis committee, and the department not
less than four (4) weeks prior to the date of the
dissertation defense.
The dissertation defense must be scheduled not less
than two (2) weeks before the Graduation
Convocation. Four copies of the dissertation
incorporating any necessary corrections and approval
by the dissertation committee and the department
chairman, must be submitted to the College of
Graduate Studies not less than ten (10) days before
the Graduation Convocation. An additional copy must
be submitted to the Department.
Dissertation Defense:
An oral
examination to defend the Ph.D. Dissertation is
required all candidates for a Doctor of Philosophy
(Ph.D.) Degree.
The student shall, in consultation with his
dissertation committee and after the approval of the
College of Graduate Studies, arrange the time and
place for defending his thesis or dissertation
publicly. The College of Graduate Studies will send
a faculty representative as an observer to attend
the defense.
The oral examination covers the student's thesis or
dissertation and the research involved in that
study. It is conducted by the student's dissertation
committee. A written notice is sent to each member
of that committee and to that committee and to that
student, indicating the time and place of the
examination. A public notice is also sent to all
members of the Graduate Faculty, inviting them to
attend. At the discretion of the chairman of the
dissertation committee, the faculty members who are
present but are not part of that committee, may be
invited to participate, but they cannot vote. The
graduate students enrolled in the College of
Engineering are normally invited to observe but not
to participate in the examination.
The dissertation committee records its vote in a
closed session and formally reports its verdict to
the Chairman of the Department, who, in turn,
reports to the Dean of Graduate Studies within four
(4) days. Doctorate degrees will be conferred only
upon a unanimous recommendation of the dissertation
committee. Successful completion of the examination
requirement must be registered not latter than ten
(10) days before graduation if the student is to be
awarded his degree at the Graduation Convocation.
A student may take this examination twice only. If a
student fails the examination twice, he shall be
expelled from the College of Graduate Studies.
