What is Geophysics?

Geophysics is the study of the physics of the Earth and the application of physical laws towards understanding its apparent and hidden features. Geophysical methods are most useful in studying and probing the interior of the earth. Many of these methods such as the seismic, gravity, magnetic, electrical, electromagnetic, and radioactive methods are used in the search for oil, gas, water, minerals, and construction materials.

The role of geophysics is to add, by means of remote measurements, a third dimension to the geological maps. The trained eye of the field geologist is aided by sophisticated instruments which detect changes in the physical properties of rocks concealed beneath the Earth's surface.
