The Third Graduates’ Seminar Day was held on May 10, 2009. H. E. Prof. Khaled S. Al-Sultan inaugurated the activity. A total of 19 Graduate Students from thirteen departments of the University presented their research on this occasion. The activity was attended by over 82 students and faculty. The Seminar Day started with a brief note by the Dean Graduate studies Dr. Salam A. Zummo. In his brief address Dr. Zummo introduced the concept of the Seminar Day Series and its foreseeable role in enhancing interdisciplinary research at KFUPM. He thanked graduate students for their participation in the activity and presenting research. Dr. Zummo also thanked Saudi Telecom for their co-sponsoring the Third Graduate’s Seminar by giving away three laptops for the best three talks presented and certificates to ten graduate students who completed their course work in semester 081 with highest grade point average. He also thanked Vice-Rector for applied research Graduate studies Professor Sahel N. Abduljauwad for his support to the activity. Closing his speech Dr. Zummo thanked H. E. the rector for his continuing support to the activity and invited him for his inaugural address.
Speaking on the occasion, H. E. Prof. Khaled S. Al-Sultan expressed his great satisfaction on active participation by students in this Seminar Day and hoped that this activity will help generate research collaboration between graduate students of the University. He congratulated the Deanship for holding the event for the third consecutive year and suggested that it may the high time for the Deanship to transform the event into a national one. He congratulated the Vice Rector, the Dean Graduate Studies and the Organizing Committee for their holding this activity and promised full support to the even in future.
After the inaugural ceremony, formal proceeding of the seminar Day began. The activity was split into five sessions. The first four sessions were reserved for presentations while the fifth session was to give awards and concluding the Seminar Day. First session was chaired by distinguished KFUPM Professor Bakir Sami Yilbas of Mechanical Engineering Department and 5 talks were presented. Second session had 4 talks delivered and Dr. A. F. M. Arif of the Mechanical Engineering Department chaired it. Sessions 3 was chaired by Dr. Mohammad Al-Shayeb of the ICS Department in which 5 talks were delivered. In fourth session 5 talks were presented and Dr. Maan A. Kousa from Electrical Engineering Department chaired it.
The fifth session was chaired by Professor Ashfaque H. Bokhari with Dean Graduate Studies as chief guest. Dr. Bokhari thanked the Dean Graduate Studies for his untiring help and support to the organizing committee. He also thanked graduate students for their presentations, member of the organizing committee. At this stage Dr. Bokhari announced the decision of the evaluation committee. According to the evaluation committee the quality of presentation was very high and therefore 6 best talks were selected for awards in stead of three. The first three talks were awarded with a laptop by the STC and remaining three with conference participation from the University. The names and departments of 6 best speakers are: Sameh Awaidah (Information & Computer Science), Khaled Arafah (Chemistry), Attia Ismail Khalifa (Mechanical Engineering), Yousef Salem Elarian (Information & Computer Science), Abdul Aziz Al Aswad (Physics), and Fahad Ahmad Hussain Abdulkhaliq (Physics).
After distributing awards and certificates of participation among graduate presenters, Dr. Salam A. Zummo thanked STC for their co-sponsoring the event once again and in recognition of STC support gave a special plaque to its representative. In the end Dr. Zummo thanked the graduate students for their presentations that made the event a successful one. He also thanked committees and staff of the office of the Deanship of Graduate Studies for their untiring efforts in holding the activity in a successful manner. With these words Dr. Zummo announced closing of the Third Graduates’ Seminar Day.
