I  cordially  welcome  you to the  Department  of Mechanical Engineering Home Page.

Since its founding in 1966, the Mechanical Engineering Department has witnessed a phenomenal expansion in all aspects. The student body has grown from a handful at the start to exceed the one thousand-mark by 1994. Today, the number is expected to stay around one thousand . Expansion in laboratory facilities has been equally phenomenal. From one laboratory in 1968, the number has gown up to about twenty laboratories and two workshops at present. Faculty have grown to become at around seventy. The Department offers two undergraduate degrees, one in mechanical engineering science and  another in applied mechanical engineering. It also has a well-established graduate program leading to MS and Ph.D. degrees.

The Department in its relatively short history has undergone quality leaps in its vast growth. It continually revised its undergraduate curricula. Revising its undergraduate programs was more directed towards accommodating continuing international changes in industrial trends, ambitious industrial outlook of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and more directly, feedback from a large body of engineering alumni being dispersed throughout layers of Saudi community. The programs, upon these revisions, gained strength, quality and recognition. ABET, in 1993 and recently in 2001 evaluated the mechanical engineering programs and judged them to be substantially equivalent to accredited programs of similar titles in the USA. The last major revision of the undergraduate curricula was concluded in 1996, and has been  implemented since the Fall semester of 1997. The Department, in its growth endeavors, started its MS program in 1975 and Ph.D. program in 1989.

The rate at which changes are taking place in the Department undoubtedly reflects the dynamic nature of its size and programs in response to an ever changing world. Challenges to the educational process will always remain there. The true challenge, however, is how to face up to them.
