Biography of Dr. Sahel N. Abduljauwad

Dr. Sahel Abduljauwad is a Professor in the Civil Engineering Department, Vice-Rector for Applied Research, Acting Vice-Rector for Graduate Studies and Scientific Research, and Director of the Office of Planning and Quality. He served as Chairman of the Civil Engineering Department (1990-1996), Director of Academic Development Center (1999-2002), and Dean of Academic Development (2002-2007). Dr. Abduljauwad received his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado-Boulder in 1985. His research interests include geotechnical engineering, soil-structure interaction and environmental geotechnique. He is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He has published over 100 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings. Dr. Abduljauwad supervised the preparation of the first strategic plan of King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (2006-2011), and contributed to the development of faculty skills in training, teaching, and evaluation of academic curricula. Biography of Dr. Bassam M. El Ali

Dr. Bassam El Ali received his Ph.D. in Petroleum Sciences and Catalysis from French Institute of Petroleum (IFP) - University Pierre and Marie Curie in France in 1989. He has worked as a research associate and then as an Assistant Professor at the Chemistry Department at Ottawa University - Canada in 1989-1996. He has served also as a visiting scientist in British Petroleum Company - UK in 1991-1992. He has been at the King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) since 1996. He became a full Professor in 2004. He is the author/co-author of 80 research articles in refereed journals and of conference papers, two patents and one book published by McGraw-Hill. He received the Distinguished Research Award from KFUPM in 2003, the Distinguished Teaching Award from KFUPM in 2004, and the Distinguished Short Course Award from KFUPM in 2005. Biography of Dr. Mohammad S. Al-Homoud

Dr. Mohammad S. Al-Homoud received his B.S. degree in May 1986 from King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM), Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and his M.S. degree in December 1989 from the Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, USA and his Ph.D. degree in May 1994 from Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, USA. Dr. Al-Homoud is an associate professor of Architectural Engineering (ARE) and the Dean of Scientific Research at KFUPM. He was the Director of the Program Assessment Center from 2003-2005. Dr. Al-Homoud is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) from the Association of Energy Engineers, USA. He has conducted a number of funded research projects in the area of building energy conservation & management. He published many articles in international journals and conferences in his field of specialization. He supervised many master theses, senior projects and co-op students. He has organized and participated in many national and international symposia and conferences. Dr. Al-Homoud is the recipient of the KFUPM Distinguished Researcher Award in 2005, the Distinguished Short Course Award in 2001, and the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1999. Dr. Al-Homoud is a member of many international professional organizations such as ASHRAE and AEE. He is listed in several editions of Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who in Engineering. In additions to his active contributions in his area of specialization, Dr. Al-Homoud has been extensively involved in academic assessment and accreditation and curricula development. He conducted and participated in many workshops on faculty development and on assessment and accreditation in higher education. Dr Al-Homoud is also active in conducting professional training short courses and consulting projects in his field of specialization. Biography of Dr. Shaikh Asrof Ali

Dr. Shaikh Asrof Ali received his Ph.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from State University of New York at Buffalo in 1980. After his post-doctoral training at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1979-81), he joined KFUPM in 1981 and became a full professor in 1995. He has published 105 research articles so far in refereed journals. His current research interests are in the area of organic synthesis, polymer synthesis and corrosion inhibition of metals. Recipient of KFUPM Distinguished Researcher Awards in 1994 and 1999, special Distinguished Research Award, College of Science in 2003, and Distinguished Teaching & Advising Award in 2001. Biography of Dr. Hassan M. Badr

Dr. Hasan Badr is a professor of Fluid and Thermal Sciences in the Mechanical Engineering Department of KFUPM. He has been teaching courses in the areas of Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer and Pumping Machinery. He has also carried out several research projects in the area of thermofluids and published about sixty papers in refereed international journals over the past twenty years. His research interests cover a wide range of topics including unsteady boundary-layers, fluid flow and heat transfer in porous media, convective heat transfer from stationary, rotating and oscillating bodies, thermal pollution in large water bodies, free convection in enclosure, and others. He attended, presented papers and chaired sessions in more than 30 scientific conferences. He received the distinguished researcher award in the College of Engineering Sciences in 1985. Biography of Dr. Hocine Bahlouli

Dr. Hocine Bahlouli received his Ph.D. in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics from Urbana-Chanpaign University, Illinois in 1988. He has worked as a post doc at the Center of theoretical physics at the University of Minnesota before joining KFUPM in September 1989. Bahlouli’s research interest include theoretical and computational work on superconductivity, transport in amorphous semiconductors and quantum transport phenomena in nanostructure devices. He became a full professor in 1999, and Physics Editor of the AJSE in 1998. He is the author/co-author of 35 research articles in refereed journals. He received the Distinguished Researcher Award from KFUPM in 2000 and is an associate member of the International Center Of Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy since 1997. Biography of Dr. Mohammed H. Baluch

Dr. Mohammed Baluch is a Professor of Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering at KFUPM. His area of research expertise includes finite element modeling of transport phenomena in concrete type materials, damage mechanics based constitutive modeling for concrete and use of fiber reinforced plastics for the repair and strengthening of concrete structures. He also has wide consulting experience in forensic engineering related to distress and failure in buildings, bridges, tanks and reservoirs, water canals and pipelines.Dr. Baluch serves as a member of Technical Committees for International Conferences and reviews papers for the American Society of Civil Engineers Composites Journal and the Cement and Concrete Composites Journal. He is also a founding member of the Saudi Chapter of the American Concrete Institute in the Eastern Province and has served on the Board of the Saudi Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers.


Biography of Dr. Abdulkader Boucherif

Dr. Abdelkader Boucherif received his MA in 1975 from UCLA and his PhD in 1979 from Brown University. He is a professor of Mathematics, author ( or co-author) of 45 research papers. Biography of Dr. Essam E. Hassan

Dr. Essam E. Hassan obtained his B.Sc. from the University of Alexandria, Egypt in 1970 and his M.S and Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada in 1974 and 1978, respectively. Dr. Hassan worked for several years with Nortel (Then Northern Telecom., Toronto, Canada ) in the digital switching division. He then joined King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) where he is now a Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department. Dr. Hassan’s major field of specialization is microwave and electromagnetic field theory in addition to the general area of communication. Dr. Hassan is the author or co-author of over twenty five journal papers in addition to numerous conference publications. Biography of Dr. Salah-Eddine Kabbaj

Biography of Dr. Gabor Korvin

Dr. Gabor Korvin is a Professor of Geophysics in the Earth Science Department. Dr. Korvin took his M.Sc. Degree in Applied Mathematics in 1965 and his Ph. D. in Geophysics in 1982, both in Hungary. In 1998 he got a Graduate Diploma in Islamic Studies from the University of New England (Australia) and is just finishing his PhD in Islamic History. Between 1965 and 1985 he worked in the Hungarian Geophysical Institute, as Head of the Seismic Theory Department. In 1986 he immigrated to Australia, and became Senior Lecturer (Geophysics) at the University of Adelaide. In 1994 he joined KFUPM as Associate Professor (Geophysics). Dr. Korvin’s main interest lies in applied mathematics, statistical rock physics and signal processing. Biography of Dr. Ali G. Maadhah

Dr. Ali G. Ma’adhah is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He has been the manager of Petroleum and Gas Technology Division of the Research Institute from 1979 to 1997. Currently he is an advisor and project manager in the Center for Refining & Petrochemicals in the Research Institute. He received his PhD degree in chemical engineering from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, USA, in 1978, his MS in chemical engineering and Chemical Engineer Degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston in 1974, and his BS degree with honors in chemical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1970. Dr. Ma’adhah’s major interests are in the areas of degradation and stabilization of polymers, petrochemicals, petroleum refining, natural gas sweetening, and water desalination. He has more than sixty-five conference/journal publications in these areas, and has also supervised the research work of several MS students. He has co-edited two books titled “Handbook of Polymer Degradation,” published by Marcel Dekker, New York, USA In 1992, and “Thermoplastics Beyond the Year 2000-A Paradigm,” published by KFUPM Press in 1996. He is the project manager of a nine years joint project between KFUPM and the Petroleum Energy Center, Japan, entitled “High Severity-Fluid Catalytic Cracking.” He has also successfully completed four projects for King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), of which he was the co-investigator. He has also organized several workshops in petrochemicals and petroleum refining at the RI. In addition to his involvement in administration and research, he teaches courses in the chemical engineering department – taught more than ten different CHE courses. He was instrumental in the establishment of KFUPM Schools, and was the vice chairman of the Schools Board for the initial six years. Dr. Ma’adhah was a member of the first Board of Directors of the Eastern Petrochemical Company (SHARQ), Al-Jubail for five years, a Director of the International Desalination Association, and is a member of the KACST National Petrochemicals Committee. He is a member of the editorial board of the Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering, and was the lead editor of six theme issues of the journal. He has been the session chairman of several national and international conferences. He is also a chairman/member of several national and KFUPM committees including the KFUPM Scientific Council. He received a Citation of Excellence from the United Nations Environmental Program for his contribution on the protection of the ozone layer in 1989, The Prince Muhammad ibn Fahd Best Research Project Awards in 1987 and 1989, and the First Scientific Award of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) in 1990. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society, Tau Beta Pi (the engineering honor society), Omega Chi Epsilon (the chemical engineering honor society), the International Desalination Association, and the Water Sciences and Technology Association. Biography of Dr. Muhammad A. Al-Marhoun

Dr. Muhammad Ali Al-Marhoun is a professor and former chairman of the Petroleum Engineering Department at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. His research interests include fluid properties and reservoir engineering. He has published several research and technical papers. He served as a Distinguished Lecturer for the 2001–2002 SPE Distinguished Lecturer Program. He received his Ph.D. in petroleum engineering from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma, U.S.A., his M.S. in mathematics and B.S. in general engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals. Biography of Dr. Sadiq M. Sait

Dr. Sadiq M. Sait obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics from Bangalore University, India, in 1981, and Master’s and Ph.D degrees in Electrical Engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM), Dhahran, in 1983 and 1987 respectively. He is currently the Chairman and Professor of Department of Computer Engineering at KFUPM. His teaching includes courses in areas related to Digital Design Automation, VLSI System Design and Computer Architecture. He was involved in several sponsored R&D projects in various VLSI Design Automation areas. He established the VLSI Design Automation Laboratory of KFUPM. In 1981 Sait received the ‘Best Electronics Engineer’ award from the Institute of Electrical Engineers, India. In 1990, 1994, and 1999 he received the ‘Distinguished Researcher’ by KFUPM. In 1988, 1989 and 1990 he was nominated by the Department of Computer Engineering for the ‘Best Teacher Award’.Sadiq M. Sait is the co-author of the following books: (1) VLSI Physical Design Automation: Theory and Practice published by McGraw-Hill Book Co., Europe, (also co-published by IEEE Press), 1995, and (2) Iterative Computer Algorithms with Applications in Engineering (solving combinatorial optimization problems)” published by IEEE Computer Society. Sait has also authored over 140 research papers in International Journals and Conferences. He has also contributed two chapters to a book entitled ‘Progress in VLSI Design’ and a chapter to the “Computer Engineering Handbook” by CRC Press.. He served on the editorial board of International Journal of Computer-Aided Design between 1988-1990. Biography of Dr. Shokri Z. Selim

Dr. Shokri Z. Selim obtained his Ph.D. in Operations Research from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1979. He is a professor of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research in the Systems Engineering Department of KFUPM. Biography of Dr. Fiazud Din Zaman

Dr. Fiazud Din Zaman received his M.Sc. in 1974 from the University of Dundee in Functional Analysis and Differential Equations and his PhD in Applicable Mathematics in 1976 from the Cranfield University in the U.K. Dr. Zaman joined King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in 1988 and he is now a Professor of Mathematics. Biography of Dr. Khalil A. Al-Ziq

Dr. Khalil Ziq is Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics at KFUPM. Dr. Ziq obtained his BSc. from University of Jordan and his Ms. and PhD. From University of Illinois at Chicago. In 1997, he spent one year at Iowa State University, and Ames Lab as a Visiting Scientist after that he became visiting associate at Ames lab for the following two years. The area of research expertise includes Superconductivity and Magnetism, thermodynamic properties and irreversible behavior in solids. Glasses and Spin-Glasses and Biomagnetesim. Currently Dr. Ziq is heavily involved in Lab development and building new experimental setups for teaching and research interest. Biography of Dr. Bilal Chanane

Dr. Bilal Chanane received his Diplome d’Etudes Superieures in 1975 from the University of Algiers, Algeria, his MSc in 1979 from the University of Missouri-Rolla, USA, and his PhD in 1990 from the University of Sheffield, UK. Before joining King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in 1994, he has worked for the Algerian National Institute for Electricity and Electronics (INELEC) as an Assistant Professor then as an Associate Professor from 1981 to 1994. He also served as the Chairman of the Pedagogical Council of the Institute in 1991-1994. He became a Full Professor of Mathematics at KFUPM in 2000. He is the author of more than 35 research papers which appeared in refereed journals with more than 30 citations.
