Due to the issues of high uncertainty and intermittent wind power, a battery energy storage system (BESS) is utilized to make the system easily dispatchable and hence reduce fossil fuel dependency. This paper focuses on the development of a new control algorithm to give an optimal dispatchable on grid-wind farm system with a BESS, which aims to minimize total energy costs injected from the main conventional grid. Several constraints related to the battery system and the wind forecast errors are considered. The new algorithm is also designed to optimize the BESS to peak shave the total system load. Scheduling of the BESS to be utilized in the occurrence of high and low electricity prices is also considered. Simulation results have shown the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in significantly reducing the main grid output power and hence reducing total energy costs.
Adeb received his BS degree from Electrical Engineering Department at KFUPM in 2018, where he is now a full-time MS student in the SE department. His research interests are in power control, robotics, and intelligent automation.
