It is one of the major teaching and research departments in the Kingdom and has prominent visibility across the globe. The department is committed to preparing its students for a variety of careers in government, industry, and teaching professions; and to advance fundamental knowledge in the areas of pure math, applied math, and actuarial science and financial mathematics through world-class research.

The department has about sixty faculty members of international stature with research interests in several areas of pure and applied mathematics, actuarial science and financial mathematics. The department has a good number of full–time  students in its graduate programs in Mathematics, and in its undergraduate majors in math, and actuarial science and financial mathematics. Students, faculty, and numerous visitors are encouraged to interact through a variety of courses, seminars, colloquia, and in other less formal ways. 

The faculty members are supported in their research by KFUPM and industry funded projects. The department invites many renowned mathematicians and actuarial scientists from all over the world to visit the department throughout the year to deliver talks and collaborate with our faculty members and graduate students. 

The department is also committed to community service through participation in national societies and organisations and through consistent support of colleagues across KFUPM.
